Landing Ship Medium

USS White River LSMR-536

📍Mathews, VA

The USS White River (LSMR-536 / LFR-536) was an LSM(R)-501-class Landing Ship Medium (Rocket) that served as a highly specialized mobile artillery platform for the United States Navy. Originally commissioned in November 1945 just after World War II as LSMR-536, the shallow-draft vessel was officially named the USS White River in 1955. Unlike traditional landing craft designed to drop infantry onto beachheads, the White River was heavily modified to carry thousands of rockets in her hold, allowing her to maneuver close to shorelines and unleash massive, rapid saturation fire on inland targets that larger warships could not easily reach.

The ship's true legacy was forged during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, where her devastating firepower earned her a fearsome reputation. Equipped with ten twin continuous-loading 5-inch Mark 102 rocket launchers, a single 5-inch dual-purpose gun, and multiple anti-aircraft mounts, the White River was capable of firing up to 250 to 300 rockets per minute. During her ten combat tours in Vietnam between 1966 and 1969, she fired hundreds of thousands of rockets to support American and allied ground troops, providing a volume of shore bombardment that Navy publications frequently compared to the firepower of a full cruiser or six destroyers. She was finally decommissioned and sold for scrap in late 1970.
