Paddle Steamer

PS Medway Queen

📍Gillingham, Kent, UK

PS Medway Queen is a historic, mobile estuary paddle steamer that earned enduring fame as the "Heroine of Dunkirk" for her legendary rescue operations during World War II. Built in 1924 by the Ailsa Shipbuilding Company in Scotland, the 180-foot, coal-fired (later oil-fired) vessel spent her early years plying the Thames Estuary as a popular tourist excursion ship. When war broke out, she was requisitioned by the Royal Navy as a minesweeper, HMS Medway Queen. Her defining moment came in May 1940 during Operation Dynamo, when she made a record-breaking seven round-trips across the English Channel to the evacuation beaches of Dunkirk. Braving intense Luftwaffe air attacks and artillery fire, her crew successfully rescued an astonishing 7,000 Allied soldiers and shot down three enemy aircraft, a feat that earned the crew numerous gallantry awards and cemented the vessel's place in British military lore.

Following the war, Medway Queen returned to her peaceful civilian excursion routes until she was taken out of service in 1963. After narrowly escaping the scrapyard, she spent the late 1960s and 1970s serving a vibrant second career as a floating marina clubhouse and nightclub on the Isle of Wight. Following a long period of subsequent neglect, sinkings, and dereliction, she was rescued by the dedicated volunteers of the Medway Queen Preservation Society, formed in 1985. Backed by a major Heritage Lottery Fund grant, her steel hull was completely reconstructed, and the ship was triumphantly returned to her home waters. Today, the beautifully restored vessel is moored at Gillingham Pier in Kent, operating as a floating museum ship and a living testament to the volunteer group's tireless dedication to preserving the UK's ultimate symbol of the "Dunkirk spirit."
