The USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. (DD-850) is a decorated Gearing-class destroyer that served the United States Navy with distinction for nearly three decades. Commissioned in 1945 and named in honor of the eldest brother of President John F. Kennedy—a naval aviator who was tragically killed during World War II—the ship quickly became an active asset in the early Cold War era. It provided crucial naval gunfire support during the Korean War and later achieved global prominence in October 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Under direct orders from President Kennedy, the destroyer dynamically took part in the enforcement of the naval blockade, intercepting and boarding the Soviet-chartered freighter Marucla to inspect its cargo for illicit offensive weapons.
In addition to its combat and blockade duties, the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. served as a recovery ship for NASA's early space programs, helping retrieve astronauts from both the Gemini 12 and Apollo 4 missions. After being decommissioned in 1973, the vessel was brought to Battleship Cove in Fall River, Massachusetts, where it was opened as a museum ship alongside the USS Lionfish and PT-617. Today, the vessel is a designated National Historic Landmark and stands as the official memorial to the citizens of Massachusetts who gave their lives during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, allowing the public to tour its preserved engine rooms, combat information spaces, and gun mounts.
