USS Orleck DD-886

📍Orange, TX

The USS Orleck (DD-886) is a legendary Gearing-class destroyer that built an astonishing record of service across the Cold War, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Commissioned in September 1945, the ship was named after Lieutenant Joseph Orleck, a World War II hero who was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. While she just missed combat in WWII, the Orleck earned a fierce reputation during the Vietnam War, where she fired more rounds in support of ground troops than any other ship of her kind. This relentless shore bombardment capability and constant presence earned her the iconic nickname "Gray Ghost of the Vietnam Coast," ultimately netting her 14 battle stars for her extensive service in that conflict alone.

After being decommissioned by the U.S. Navy in 1982, the destroyer was transferred to Turkey, serving another two decades as the Yücetepe before finally returning to the United States in 2000 to be preserved. Today, the historic vessel is open to the public as the centerpiece of the Jacksonville Naval Museum in downtown Jacksonville, Florida. Having undergone extensive restoration to her 1962 modernization configuration—complete with her prominent 5-inch gun mounts and anti-submarine weapon systems—the Orleck serves as a floating classroom and a powerful living memorial to the generations of sailors who walked her decks.
